ARCOT RR trip on June 16, 2005.

When you visit Austin, stop by the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art.  Jack has been a member of our club since its founding and retired as the CEO of Scurlock Permian division of Ashland Inc.  Jack Blanton became president of Scurlock Oil Company in 1958.  Plains All American Pipeline acquired Scurlock Permian from Ashland in 1999.  Scurlock Permian was one of the oldest and most respected gathering and marketing companies in the crude oil industry.

The Blanton ranks as the nation's largest university art museum, and its outstanding permanent collection – the largest in Central Texas – is comprised of more than 17,000 pieces, from priceless antiquities to more modern works.   Strong holdings of American, Latin American, and European art, along with prints and drawings, comprise the backbone of the collection, which is also bolstered by new acquisitions of contemporary works.

To the east, the 105,000 square foot Gallery Building is the larger of the two buildings, housing exhibition galleries, the Print and Drawing Study Center, and all collection support areas.   Temporary exhibitions take place on the ground floor, and the second floor is dedicated to the display of the Blanton’s permanent collection, with works of art that span the history of Western civilization.   The paintings, sculptures, installations, and works on paper are on view within suites of comfortable, light-filled galleries arranged to guide visitors pleasantly through the art collection.   The galleries surround a beautiful, skylit atrium with 40-foot ceilings, and two window-lined rotundas will provide places to rest, peruse resource materials about the art on view, or enjoy a quiet contemplative moment.

Across a grand, open plaza that serves as a pedestrian entry to the UT Austin campus, the 50,000 square foot Education, Visitor Services, and Administration Building, serves as the hub of educational and social activities, with a 299-seat auditorium, a sixty-seat lecture hall, and several classrooms.   This building also has a café and bookstore, in addition to Museum staff offices.

Let me hear your ideas for future trips for our Ashland Retiree group.
